I'd have to see the code that does the initialization -- in context -- to make an informed suggestion about what might be going on.
You might try getting a little fancier. Use +1 as an indication you were going up, and -1 as an indication you were going down. Then you can initialize to zero, and your operator should have complete authority to move the chain either direction
once until the mark is seen.
