The reverse of that may be true, but iTunes is far from useless without an iPod. I got iTunes before I got my iPod just to play songs. It is a solid player that looks good and is functional. The fact that it duplicates itself onto my iPod at lightning speed is just an added bonus. iPods only enhance the iTunes experience (especially if the iPod has laser engraving).
By the way, mp4 is just the newest MPEG encoding format by the International Organization for Standardization.
