Rhapsody was the operating system that could run natively on both on X86 and PPC equipment. Rhapsody was basically the NEXT operating system with a new interface. The applications were even cross compatible because of an application environment called "Yellow Box"(Now known as Cocoa). However it was dropped because many key developers didn't want to program in Cocoa.

Mac OS X was based on Rhapsody but also had carbon and the classic environment.
