OK, time for the gloves to come off..
Those model engines are cool, but if we really wanted to
go, then we need to talk either a
Ford GT 5.4 liter 520-HP V-8 (for the thrift minded among us), or go all-out with the
Bugatti Veyron 1001 HP W-16 cylinder monster.
In either case, with the given mass-to-power ratio, I think that we could reach orbital velocities pretty easily.
Of course, there is still that nasty little matter of not enough oxygen to sustain an internal combustion engine, but we can take care of that problem when we get there...
