It's called an archetype or a standard story line. And your mistaken if it's only been used recently. The word robot originated from a very old play where robots take over human kind. Also, ideas of robotics can even be traced as far as the Greeks. That would be the equivalent of saying every single detective story is trite since it was created by Poe. Moreover, almost every show or movie can be made to seem trite if you strip it to it's archetype.
