2001: A Space Odyssey was actually based on Clarke's short story The Sentinal, which was published in 1954. Although The Sentinal ends with the discovery of a monolith on the Moon, it does include a reference to an advanced computer system - thus, the case can be made that HAL actually dates all the way back to then. But all that is really just academic, because HAL wasn't a robot and this is just a digression from the original topic anyway...
