Team 311, the Red Jammers, won the Long Island Regional Chairman's. Among other stuff we've done...
- Large student (including many non-Robotics members) participation in new "Principles of Engineering" course that's heavily influenced by FIRST
- Took last year's robot around to every kindergarden, elementary school, and junior high in the district to help get kids interested in FIRST as well as technology and science in general
- Mentored rookie Long Island-area FIRST teams as well as our own FIRST Lego League program... goals, balls, and tools in pit area were community property
- Great relationship with the school board (quadrupled our funding this year)
- Even better relationship with the East Islip community (we hold several community fundraisers - a square dance, pancake breakfasts, car washes just this year - and we've taken the robot to minor league baseball games as well as "marching" it in this year's Homecoming parade)
- Massive participation by the school's student body - 60+ students involved in Robotics, while our band, kickline, and cheerleaders all attended and performed at the LI regional
- Robot is 100% student designed and built
As for awards, no, we didn't win any others, though I noticed that the Regional Chairman's winners at the other competitions were conspicuously absent from most other awards. Hmm..
