He could copyright any source code released (an open source license is essentially a detailed copyright) or any document detailing the algorithm, but I don't
think it wouldn't actually protect the algorithm itself. I may be wrong about that.
Putting a copyright notice on is easy, at least. Just stick a "Copyright 2004 by Alphabob (real name, obviously)." And, the best part is, you can do that for free. No registration, nothing.
