Interesting. The impression I had was that usually "real" botbuilders built autonomous and/or microcontroller-operated robots, though the lines are getting blurred, especially in the Northeast US, where some folks are beginning to build crude autonomous combat robots, using basic stamps and sensors. They haven't done so well overall, but they have actually won fights against human-driven bots.
