I know what you mean, me and my fellow animator were working on the animation during the march break. We worked practically 14 hour days. I was up at 7 got to his house by 9 or 10, worked until midnight sometimes. Then we managed to fedex it on the friday before it was due. I made a personal note to get started on the animation a lot sooner than what we did this year.
Good luck next year getting that animation in on time. If you'd like a suggestion, try to start working on it early. You can draft up some ideas and storyboards about what to do. Either be it aboot FIRST or your future robot. Based on those storyboards, you could probably start modelling some of the props other than the robot (since you'd have no idea what it would look like). Maybe develop some good looking textures and develop your skills in IK, lighting, particle systems, dynamics, and other special effects.
