Oh, the horror! If we all did that, then those poor people driving those trucks and flying those planes and all of those postal employees would be laid off because there was no work for them to do... and the fuel companies would have to raise their costs all around to make up for the loss... everyone would suffer...

I think a smile is well worth the cost of a card and a stamp! And I love giving presents, yes, I love it more than receiving presents (though I do like that part too, I'm not completely unselfish!).
