Though like Chris, my employer takes care of patent filing, I know that they peg their average costs for filing a patent at $50,000. That covers attorney's fees, USPO fees, internal costs (the time we spend working on the patent application, etc.), and I work in New Jersey, where everyone's expenses are grossly inflated.

As far as hints, most importantly: have everything in writing (black ink prefered), signed, witnessed and dated regularly through the invention process. All your notes and ideas should be written down, preferably in a bound notebook. It doesn't have to be pretty or in good english, but needs to be understandable by someone knowledgeable about in the field.
