Yeah I was figuring the same thing. Just use a ball mouse. Optical mice are not meant to detect any fast movements. You can prove this by moving your optical mouse very fast on the mouse pad you will see that the curser on the screen seems to go in random patterns.

The only problem with ball mice that I can figure is the problem with resistance, but that should be negligible
