The point of your control box overhanging the shelf is more of a problem for you then for FIRST. During Auton mode i have seen robots come from one side of the field directly across and hit at a high speed into the opposite alliance's drivers stations diamond plate wall. The result of this many times for control boxes is them falling to the floor. If your control box is all ready hanging over the edge of the shelf you have a much higher chance of having it fall to the floor. If this occurs and damages your control box or joysticks it is then up to you to fix them. I would suggest you to make a control unit that is smaller then the available space and to have some sort of grip feet on the bottom.
