The result of this many times for control boxes is them falling to the floor. If your control box is all ready hanging over the edge of the shelf you have a much higher chance of having it fall to the floor. If this occurs and damages your control box or joysticks it is then up to you to fix them. I would suggest you to make a control unit that is smaller then the available space and to have some sort of grip feet on the bottom.

I'm not in any way worried it would fall off, I'm talking around an inch and a half. In any case it'll most likely way too much and have much too low a center of gravity to fall off because of an autonomous robot.
