Question Brake/Coast setting for speed controller

Hello, we were wondering if any teams out there were planning on using the brake function for the drive train speed controllers during autonomous and then having your program switch it into the coast function for the user mode. We have a spike relay connected to another external electronic coil relay used to switch between brake and coast. However, when I posted the question about doing this on the FIRST FAQ (question #1592 and many other follow up questions) they said that this could not be done according to rule <R53>. But looking at <R53> it says that custom electronics cannot directly affect the power or pwm signals going to the speed controllers. To me, it doesn't look like our circuit is doing that. So my question is...are any other teams using both modes for the speed controller. And if so, how are you doing it? I know you can hook up a Digital I/O and use that, but are there any other ways?
