Kevin and Sanddrag,
The motor speed device is listed for AC/DC as series wound motors will run on both but at 120 volts. If you look at your plugin drill it may say AC/DC. (Parts of some cities are still running DC in older sections. Milwaukee is rumored to still have buildings downtown with DC, for instance. )
A rheostat will work but it's value must be matched to the load impedance or you don't get any control. Just on and off.
