1) Yagi Antenna
2) You don't have to unless you need to have the signal go across 10 miles of air.
The easiest way to test this is by building one from a pringles can:

Now, this all comes with a nice little warning about breaking FCC regulations, as seen here:

But if you're beyond that, then it's all good!
(P.S. Unless you want to retain your eyesight, I don't suggest staring down one of these tubes while in operation. The firing electrons and the 2.4GHz connection [which just so happens to be the resonance frequency of water {microwave}] can hurt a bit.)
