There is also gmax, a free, downloadable version of 3D Max that looks about the same with the same tools. The big difference is it lacks either (or both) animation or rendering. It looks and feels like 3DSM and also great to learn on. saves stuff as 3DSM scenes, but can't import ones made my 3DSM.
