Thanks for the advice , I got my birthday money today and plan on buying your AVR controller soon (for this project and future ones). Odds are, for the current time, I'm going to be using a potentiometer attached to a stick with a ping pong ball at the end. Eventually I'll probably use an IR distance sensor.
