dying internet

Hey
I have a 3 com modem/router which connects to my pipex isp. It used to be a 512 k service however a couple of days ago it was supposedly updated to a 1 meg. According to the router its connecting at 2 meg download, however a net test showed it was downloading at 960 kb/s. Since the upgrade the internet has died every 2 minutes or so... causing me great angst as it does automatically re connect but its just impossible to do anything like download something.
Anyone have any ideas why it could be doing this (adsl btw)
Stephen
(note : it died as i finished the post and went to hit the submit button...)
