i know about changing all the registers, i've been doing that to all the code our FIRST team already had so that i could migrate it over to the 2nd PIC and leave the RC for autonomous decision making. i've changed all the registers and the confusion that has started on the thread is due to the fact that there are two things happening here.

1) i'm trying ot get data of the board serially straight to the computer to make sure everything works

i tired printfing a straight string with no data variables and it still hung meaning no communication is getting established, i'm not sure why. i'll show my redone code for the 452 in the next post

2) THEN, i'm going to use the TTL line for the PIC to RC comms

so i will be looking into our choice of cables, thank you guys for pointing out that issue. i did not know about it.
