About 33% of FLL participants are girls and about 27% of FRC participants are girls. According to the Chief Operating Officer of Girls Inc, those numbers are good, but FIRST would like to improve them.
Girls FIRST is an initiative within HQ that is working on addressing the needs of girls already involved in FIRST while trying to recruit more girls. The Girls
FIRST Advisory Committee was formed in August, 2004 and includes
representatives from NASA, Girls Inc, FIRST, FRC teams, FLL teams, the NH
Commission on the Status of Women (every state has such a Commission) as
well as judges for FIRST. Girls FIRST is currently working on building
solid partnerships, developing programs for girls in conjunction with Girls
Inc. and the Girl Scouts, and has been piloting girls-only programs in the
state of New Hampshire.
If you are interested in getting involved, PM me and I will give you more info.
Sorry for the confusion! There are so many organizations out there all trying to achieve the same things…it is about time we all start working together
