I didn't see the first movie because Mr Heinlein was probably rolling over in his grave at the making of it. He was adamant that NONE of his stories be made into movies, ever. This was due to the horrible experience he had with the first and last movie he did. After that he vowed "Never Again!" and repeatedly turned down offers for movie rights. Since he made his wishes on this point abundantly clear, I chose to honor the writer's wishes by not contributing to an effort I am sure he would disapprove.
From what I heard about it, the producers kinda missed the point of the book (to put it mildy). I do recomend the book, it has some interesting things to say, especially since 9/11. I think that the movie would be somewhat different if it were made today. Mr H might even approve, after all whether it's a "bug war" or a "terrorist war" there are still no civilians. Just ask the Israelis
In any case, I wouldn't be too thrilled about a sequel either.
