Use a flexible shaft coupler. For an example of one that adapts a
1/4 inch shaft to a 3/8 inch shaft, see the web page at:

These couplers are available from many sources.

You can also use a coupler that is not flexible, but then you need to
make the mounting for the pot flex a little to avoid problems with binding.
