All I can say to that is OMG. They need to fire those idiots. If someone doesn't know what a carriage bolt is, they have no business working in a hardware store IMHO. You'd think they'd at least make them take a basic hardware knowledge test before hiring them to work in a hardware store. I once encountered an employee in the plumbing department of my LHS who didn't know what a PVC pipe cap was. As a person who visits a hardware multiple times each week, it is sad to see the quality of service degrading faster than a, uh, oh um, landslide.
