Singapore team featured in local news

A number of Singapore schools are putting their brains together to compete against the very best in robotics in the US.

The team is made up of students from Secondary and Pre-University levels.

The team of CHIJ, Temasek Secondary and Millenia Institute students will be competing against the best minds in their age group from countries such as North America, United Kingdom and Brazil.

They are building a robot using the latest design software and, to beat others for top spot, it has to be the fastest and most accurate.

In last year's competition, Millenia Institute secured the most prestigious award in the event, and it hopes this year will be no different.

Dr Chia Fu Siong, Teacher-in-Charge, Millenia Institute, said: "I proposed to them that, why don't we do something more meaningful besides going for competition, to have a project to integrate robotics with mathematics and science. This is in view of engaging students in making learning of maths and science more interesting and now we managed to gather students from the age group of 13 years old to 18 to come together to learn and share with each other through peer learning they managed to benefit each other."

The students are equally excited and are eager to prove that they're up to the challenge.

Henrietta Goh, Student, Temasek Secondary, said: "I learned to see the relationship between maths and science and how I can apply all this knowledge and including all those other skills I learned in school into daily practice such as our robot."

"Well I feel very honoured because I will be representing Singapore to go to the USA. I'll be a good ambassador for Singapore and we'll do our best."

Winners will receive a championship trophy, and of course priceless recognition. - Channel NewsAsia
