Counter: Hold the balls through your 40 sec scoring period and score during the final period preventing your oppenent from having a chance to get the balls back. You will a) know their score, and b) know what you need to beat them.
This allows you to put your alliances robots in the right place to get on the ramp, score balls, prevent them from getting on the ramp or scoring balls.
Folks Bill is saying this a highly defensive game and winning in auton gives you the advantage of knowing what to do for the last 80 secs of the match much sooner than your opponent and keep them trying to catch up from behind.
