Machine vision and autonomous navigation are a couple of technologies that I work on in my day gig. If you can ignore the first thirty seconds or so, have a look at this
movie which discusses a few of the algorithms we used on the MERs that enable autonomous navigation on Mars. To get started on autonomous path planning, google on "D* path planning" and you should be able to find quite a bit of material. There is also an
open source vision library that Intel started.
