I'm totally with Al here; solenoids are a nice, simple solution to a lot of problems which we solve nowadays with pneumatics or servos.

By the way, 522 posted a question to the Q&A about using electromagnetic shaft brakes (on Spikes). Let's see how FIRST treats that one; it's similar in principle.
