It helps if you have some connection to a company, like a parent, mentor, etc.

Another thing you may want to think about is asking for services instead of money. One of our sponsors in a machine shop and they do all of our machining for free, or they'll let students come in and do it... This comes in very handy. Another one of our sponsors is a print shop and they do all of our printing, engraving, shirts, stickers and decals either at cost or for free.

Finally, stay local. You'd be surprised how many local companies want to help out.
