I wouldn't call it intelligence as much as I would call it luck. In order for his business model to work he needed to get some high-profile investors right off the bat. What did these investors get for investing hundreds or possibly thousands of dollars? A GIF image with the hope that the site makes it big, if not than the money is wasted.

The hype about the site will wear down in a couple months or so and people will stop visiting it, then the companies that did buy ad space would realize the money would've been much better spent in an intelligent Adsense campaign.
