anyone can click on the little scales icon on the upper right of any post, and give + neutral or - rep for a post.

Once you give someone rep points, you have to give rep points to a certain number of other people before you can give it to that person again.

People with lots of + rep points have more influence (impact) when they give you rep.

The idea is for the forum to be self-monitoring to some degree. If someone tells you its a good idea to short out your battery with 6 gauge wire when you are not useing it, and you look over and see they have 5 red squares (negative) then you take their advice with a grain of asprin.

Genrally speaking, negative rep should only be given to someone who's post or behaviour is unacceptable, not simply because you dont like what they say, or dont agree with it.
