We had a layout like this last year but we used divs and it worked out well.

We had an HTML site and a Flash driven site but decided to just go with the HTML site.
The site was designed last year by a very talented student named Hoang who decided not to come back this year. I think he took up a sport and is doing photography for the yearbook.
