After reading all the posts I'm going with option three. While I agree with Mr. Patterson, that teams deserve recognition for their accomplishments, I don't think it should be at the expense of a team going to nationals. Yes, it's arguable that a team who places second would have lost at nationals anyway, but I don't think such a decision should be made at a regional. I like seeing a large and varied competition for national awards.
