Tagging Pictures with Full Names

Hey everyone,

One of the mentors of my team recently emailed me a concern of his regarding the tagging of photos on CD Media with the full names of the people in the photos.

I was looking through the pictures you have posted on ChiefDelphi. With the new tag and search system it is easy to find all of them. Unfortunately this also causes a concern for me and that is protecting our younger members. I would like to follow the same guidelines that FIRST has set up for the Google Blog:

Home > FIRST Robotics Competition > Team Photo Blog Powered By Google > Blog

Do Not Post

  • Pictures and descriptions of any robot design ideas or implementations you want to keep secret.
  • Inappropriate photos or language -- Google and FIRST will remove any posts that are deemed unsuitable for a high school audience.
  • Real names of your team members (if they are not yet 18).
Could you please go back and remove all tags and names in descriptions as specified in the Do Not Post section above. You can put in their CD name if they are members if you want.
For the safety of all of the young people on this forum, I recommend that we should refrain from tagging photos with the full names of people under 18. If they are already a member on ChiefDelphi, let them tag the photo themselves with their full name (that way, they are giving their express permission for others to view their name). If the person doesn't have an account, you can choose to ask that person permission first before tagging with their name. However, keep in mind that if an incident were to happen (although it is unlikely), the law could get very ambiguous surrounding the issue if you were the one who posted the person's name (even if they DID give you verbal permission first). Parents may choose to hold you liable... etc.

So, even though I am not in charge of making rules, please be aware that the Internet can be a dangerous place, and not everyone is comfortable with their full name and photo being posted online. In the name of safety and etiquette, don't post a minor's full name unless they tell you it is ok first. Even with verbal permission, proceed with caution (because you could potentially be held accountable). Let people tag their own photos with their full names instead.

Thanks!

-- Jaine

As a side note, I have not talked to a moderator yet about removing the tags of the people who appear in my team photos. This is because I haven't gotten a chance to ask everyone's permission yet. (Basically, I am seeing if there is any need in the first place to remove tags at all)
