I was actually shocked at how low the number was. 20,000 over 4 years doesn't seem like very many.

At the risk of going off-topic further, it seems like the first year was slow.
Engadget reports that there were 6000 sold at the first recall back in September 2003. So that's 17,000 or so over the past three years (a smidge under 6,000 a year), compared with 6000 from February 2004 to September 2003 (about a year and a half).
And, just to say I wasn't totally off-base, props to Segway for getting on top of this before it becomes another case of exploding laptops.
