Use of servos in practice

In theory, it seems that servos should be highly useful for manipulators, especially if you want to limit the extent of rotation. But in actual practice, we haven't been able to make use of them. All of our manipulators are radically geared down (a typical ratio is 25:1), which means that the 120 degree rotation shrinks to less than 5 degrees, which isn't practical for much of anything.

Does anyone actually use the servos in the Vex kit, and if so, how? At the moment, we would gladly trade our servos for more motor modules.
