Do you have cookies disabled in your browser? All the user session login 'stuff' is temporarily stored in cookies in your browser. If you are browsing with cookies disabled and/or blocked, you will experience the exact same problems you describe.
If cookies are enabled in your browser, check to see that they have not been permanently blocked by Firewall/Internet Security software.
