iPart's geometry is usually controlled by values in an embedded data table. Normally you don't edit the iPart file directly; they are designed to be placed in an assembly and when you place it you will be presented with a dialog to select the part features (called "Keys").

If you want to see what makes an iPart tick, you can right-click the Table at the top of the Model Browser and edit it. There are some good tutorials on iParts around - I like Sean Dotson's stuff.
