Well there's a pot attached to it, so it seems you're going to have closed loop control of whatever system this powers. Are those F-P motors? It reminds me a bit of our dual Fisher-Price/Bosch planetary gearbox combo that powered the first stage of our extension arm in 2004. We did the "gear down for torque, then gear up for speed" thing in a similar configuration to your setup. The output sprocket of the gearbox was attached to a long run of #25 chain that drove the lift, which could quickly lift us with more oomph in reserve. If those are F-P's in the picture, I will guess this is part of your robot lifting system. If they aren't F-P's, I will guess this is the base of an extending arm.
