336 would be the perfect number. It would mean 84 teams per division. And since 84 is divisible by 6, no surrogate matches would be needed. 14 matches would be needed per round. Which means it would take 98 matches to get each of the robots to play in 7 rounds. This spread would also mean that there is no reason any robot should ever have to play in a round with any robot more than once (whether with or against).
