While your solution may be hard to actually implement (such as deciding which teams need to stay behind, how those matches would factor into rankings, how you can input a surrogate team 'on the fly' with the scoring software, how you would eliminate the other team from that match, etc.), a similar solution of a '
placebo' robot might be feasible. In the FRC almost a decade ago, there used to be placebo robots that were used as 'stand-ins' for no-show teams. They never actually did anything (one was a remote-controlled vacuum cleaner), but they were there just for the show.
