It sounds like you are using Internet Explorer [6], as this is one of the only browsers that does not automatically truncate the tooltips for items to only one line.
Solution:
get Firefox 2.0!
Now, your tooltips will be will be limited to a single line, without any need for Brandon to make some code modifications and/or add unnecessary Javascript to an already heavily modified vBulletin.
