With 8 hrs talk time or 6 hrs Internet or 24 hours of audio playback per recharge, using your iPhone for 1-2 hours per day (mixed use) would result in needing to recharge the batteries about twice per week. With 52 weeks per year, that's 104 recharges per year.
Even if your iPhone will still retain 80% of its battery life after 400 recharges, that's almost four years later.
Unless you are a extreme power user who watches a feature-length movie, browses the web for hours, and makes dozens upon dozens of calls every day, your shouldn't have to worry about replacing your iPhone battery anytime soon.

You also have to consider that when you don't have service, the phone wastes battery power searching for a signal to use. My phone would last days in ideal conditions (good, non roaming service). But since i'm indoors most of the day, I must recharge my phone nightly or it would die.
