http://www.linuxcnc.org/ is an awesome operateing system for homebuilt equipment.

heres a link to the mill I have. It's a good mill as long as you arent trying anything larger then 4 inches. http://www.maxnc.com/page4.html

I've been working on a much larger CNC mill, however the cost of parts is about $300 per axis for a decently sized mill.
