You are right that many locations have the population density to support future regional competitions. However, the most important consideration is not the density of the general population (OK, there are at least three ways that one can be misinterpreted... ), but the density of the team population. Boise, Salt Lake City, Knoxville, Albuquerque (why can't I say that without thinking of Wierd Al?), etc are all reasonably large population centers. But with only nine teams in Idaho, three in Utah, four in Tennessee, and three in New Mexico, it may be a while before it makes sense to put any regional competitions there.
