Yea I've been reading up on NMEA over the past few days. I was looking at this GPS reciever
http://www.parallax.com/detail.asp?product_id=28146 but I was unsure if the VEX controller would be able to decode the input to be able to control the robot. I talked to a sales rep from Parallax and he was unsure as well.
