It is my speculation that this is the direction it is heading. I think that only letting 8 alliances into the eliminations is step one of getting everyone used to the thought of not being in a portion of the competition.

: Imagine with this year's format if we would have used the regionals as qualifiers for the Nationals!

: Imagine if the top 8 from each regional got to pick an alliance partner to bring with them. Then the Nationals could be one large best 2-out-of-3 double elimination competition (four matches guaranteed).
