It kinda goes both ways. The card in your computer has it's limitations to what it can receive, and the router has it's limitations to what it can transmit. Most routers today broadcast in more than one mode (b and g for the most part). This is done so then if you have a B only card in your laptop, or a G only, then you will be able to pick the signal up still. Also this makes routers and wireless cards more universal.
